Shoalwater Bay

Putting the 'Story' back in History  

A Look at the Early Days around Shoalwater Bay and on the Long Beach Peninsula The course will examine Long Beach Peninsula’s past through early correspondence and diaries, from family stories and period newspapers, and from the oral histories of those who lived here in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition, methods of documenting and perpetuating contemporary history will be scrutinized and students will be given practical tools for putting their own stories into historical perspective.


Class is held at Columbia Education Center in Room 101
on Tuesdays beginning May 5th and ends June 23rd.
Class time is 5:30pm – 7:20pm and the fee is $69.00

Digital Photography I  

Digital Photography IEvolve your photography skills and unlock the full potential of your camera by “taking control” of exposure. Move beyond "auto" settings and acquire understanding and confidence using the more advanced aperture and shutter speed modes and menu settings. Combine the technical with “Magical Light” and you’ll take images to the next level and have FUN! Please bring digital SLR or advanced point/shoot camera (Please confirm your advanced point & shoot camera has the ability to adjust aperture and shutter speed before enrolling) and manual, charged batteries and your sense of adventure the first night of class

Class is held at Columbia Education Center in Room 101
on Tuesday and Thursdays beginning May 12th  and ends June 11th.

Digital Photography II  

Sharpen your photography skills, refine your techniques and get your creative juices flowing! In this class designed for intermediate photographers, discover how to make more powerful images by delving deeper into advanced elements & principles of composition, metering, exposure, on camera flash, filters, focus and creative uses of your camera’s functions. Weekly in-class discussions & hands-on exercises, out of class assignments and critiques will challenge you to discover new ways of seeing, expand your creativity and become one with your camera! Students will be invited to exhibit photographs in the Hawk’s Gallery.

Discovery Trail hike
Saturday, June 13th, Our voyage sets foot at the Seaview Beach Approach south on the Discovery Trail learning about the different fauna and flora that surrounds us; at O’Donnell Rock we will leave the trail for the beach, to walk to Fishing Rocks, continuing the discussion on beaches and seasonal changes to the dunes. Kathleen Sayce, local ecologist, will be leading this 5 mile hike. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as well as clothing suitable for the weather of the day. A sack lunch, bottle of water, and snack will be provided. Pick up locations include: Aberdeen at 7 am, Raymond at 8 am, and Ilwaco at 9 am. Cost $72.83   Register Online

Gary ClayHoh Rainforest Photography Workshop
Saturday, June 20th
Professional Photographer and Grays Harbor College Photography Instructor, Ken Lucke, will be our guide as we venture into the beautiful and mysterious Hoh River Rainforest for a full day of photography instruction. Learn tips & techniques, and get advice on landscape photography in general, while exploring this phenomenal area of the Olympic Rain Forest. Ken’s longtime friend and mentor, Gary Clay, a Hoquiam-born professional photographer who knows the Hoh intimately, will also be accompanying us on this trip as a guest instructor. Critiques and evaluation of the day’s shoot will be done on return to Aberdeen. We will be picking up students at 6 AM in Aberdeen on Main Campus. Cost $124.70   Register Online

Please note, (D)SLR (recommended) or Advanced Point & Shoot camera required, tripod recommended, especially for night shooting. This is a Rain or Shine trip, so bring weather appropriate gear to protect yourself & your camera.


Ashland Elizabethan Theatre

Shakespeare in Ashland
A summer EDventure to Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, August 17-22, 2015, is being offered by Grays Harbor College. Participants pay one low price which includes transportation, accommodations, 5 breakfasts & 5 dinners, plus tickets to EIGHT plays, and prefaces in Ashland. Cost is $1,390.84 per person. Prior to leaving for Ashland, participants can attend pre play discussions at GHC. This EDventure is guided by Grays Harbor College Theatre/Communications Instructor, Brad Duffy. Do you have high school credits, work experience, military experience, parenting experience, or other life experience, but no high school diploma or equivalency? High School 21+ program is for you!

The HS21+ program allows you to:

  • Earn your Washington State high school diploma
  • Open doors for financial aid eligibility, vocational training programs, or degree programs
  • Only pay $25 per quarter (waivers available)
  • Earn credit for prior learning, work experience, parenting experience, military experience, certifications, and other life experience (foreign education and experience can be considered)
