MEN’S BASKETBALL PREVIEW

High expectations accompanied the start of practice on October 15th, as first year Coach George Swanson welcomed a team with a nice mix of key returning players and some exciting and talented newcomers.  Coach Swanson will be assisted by Mark Schlott, a key player on last year’s Chokers team.

Leading the returning players is 6’9” sophomore center Brad Hodge from Hillsboro, Oregon.  Brad is an athletic inside player with the unique ability to both run the court and step outside and hit the three.  A pair of 6’7” forwards, sophomore Lance Anderson from Willapa Valley High School and sophomore Bryan Trask from Aberdeen High School will both play key roles for the Chokers.  Anderson is a player whose rebounding and shot blocking ability will be a key to the Choker defense, while Trask can run the court and finish strong on the offensive end.  Another local product, Aberdeen High grad Aric Cleverly completes the list of returners for the Chokers.  Cleverly, a 6’4” forward gives the Chokers experience and shot making ability from that forward position.

One of the more exciting and talented group of newcomers to join the Chokers in recent memory will don the Blue and Silver for the 2007-2008 season.  Leading this group is 1st team 5A all-state guard Nick Schultens, a product of the same Hillsboro High School program that produced center Brad Hodge.  Schultens, a 6’4” guard was a much sought after recruit following his senior season at Hillsboro,  and graduated with a 3.7 GPA.  His smooth playmaking ability should make him a key performer for the Chokers at both ends of the court.  Joining Schultens in the back court is Terry Coleman, an all-state player from New York who led his high school team to a 21-2 record last season.  Coleman is a super quick ball handler, who has the ability to beat the opponent off the dribble as well as knock down the outside shot.  Early season practices have highlighted the talent of 6’3” swingman Quillar Marion.  “Q”, as he is known to his teammates is another product of the New York prep
system, and brings great energy to the court and promises to play a key role in the Chokers transition game. Will Thomas, a 6’5” forward from Baltimore gives the Chokers another high energy player who has the ability to “bang” inside with the big boys.

A couple of Californian’s, both with one year of college experience under their belts are 6’4” forward Courtney Beach and 6’2” guard Cameron Edison.  Beach and Edison teamed together at Rolling Hills Prep High School in Carson, California, before Beach went on to play his freshman year at Skyline Junior College, and Edison at Allan Hancock Junior College.  Both players bring athleticism to their respective positions and should be very effective players running the court.  Two sharp shooting guards, Brady Langer, a 6’3” player out of Willapa Valley, and 5’10” Josh Hawks round out the Choker roster for this season.  Langer, a 1st team all-state player in high school gives the Chokers another outside scoring threat, while Hawks will bring high energy play off the bench.  The final member for the Chokers is 6’4” forward LaMarc Saunders, a talented athletic player from Los Angeles who will red-shirt this season.
