WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PREVIEW

Coach Mary VandenHazel returns for her second season as head coach of the Lady Chokers, and welcomed 11 players to the start of practice on October 15th.  Coach VandenHazel brings both energy and commitment to the women’s program, and has spent the past year recruiting players to fit her system, as well as incorporating a variety of team building activities to strengthen her team and the qualities necessary for a successful season.

Coach VandenHazel is assisted by Sarah Alvarez, also in her second season, by Choker alum Cindy Creviston, in her first season, and by her father, Dwight Cranston, a long time high school coach in the Longview area, and a member of the Washington State Coaches Association Basketball Hall of Fame.

Leading the Lady Chokers into the 2007-2008 season will be sophomore Sarah Sides, a 5’9” guard from Raymond High School.  Sarah was named team MVP following last season, and will serve as team captain this year.  Sarah’s on court leadership will be critical for the Chokers this season, as she is one of only two returning players with game experience.  The other returner is 5’3” guard Kassie Braden, a three point specialist from North Beach High School.

Leading an impressive list of freshmen for the Chokers is 6’0” post player Kellie Read from Aberdeen High School.  Kellie is recovering from ACL surgery which took away her senior season at Aberdeen, but looks to be a force for the Chokers with her strong play on both ends of the court.  Heidi Viereck, 6’0” all-league post player from North Beach High School will also play the post position, and her strong rebounding ability will be important to starting the transition game for the Chokers.
Caitlyn Whitbeck, a 5’10” graduate of Hoquiam High School will play both the forward and post position, and should provide a physical presence underneath the hoop.  Crystal Smith, a  5’10” first team all league player from South Bend High School, and a member of the Choker Volleyball team will play the forward position.  Crystal is extremely athletic and will be relied upon for her ability to run the court and block shots.

Five guards, all of whom earned all-league recognition for their respective high school teams complete the Choker roster.  Shareese Willey, a first-team all-league performer at Mary M. Knight High School, and Bonnie Perez an intense defensive specialist from Ilwaco High School will play the point guard position.  Caylee Sweatman, a 5’8” all-league guard at Aberdeen High School is an exciting all around player, while Erin Saari, a 5’10” first team all-league player at Naselle High School is another athletic player who loves to run the court.  Rounding out the Chokers roster is Lauren Harris, a 5’4” sharpshooter from Lake Quinault High School, whose shooting ability and versatility will boost the Chokers perimeter game.
