   Advising Updates for Spring, 2008

General Updates

Please take note that classrooms for spring quarter WAOL classes will open on March 20th and instruction will begin on March 27th. Our GHC winter quarter finals will be March 25th to 27th. Therefore, we will have students who need to start their spring WAOL classes while still completing their winter on-campus classes. This may cause confusion for students, so please make them aware of it if they plan to take online classes in spring quarter.

Updates from Faculty and Other Departments

From the Math and Sciences Division

The MATH 98 section at 1pm is linked to a study skills course taught by Laura Ratcliff.

Biol& 221, Biological Science I – Evolution and Ecology will be offered in place of the old Biol 201.
This is the first course in the Biology sequence, so students who would have needed the old 201-203 sequence, will need to start this new sequence in the Spring.  The pre-requisites have also been lowered so this course is accessible to more students. Any questions should be directed to Mohammad Ibrahim or Russ Jones.

There will hopefully be a new class, MATH 97,
Intermediate Algebra for Liberal Arts, in the Fall.  This is an alternative to MATH 98 for students who only need MATH 107 or MATH 131 or MATH 132 to earn their degrees.  It is not for students headed to MATH 111 or MATH 141.  So, if you have advisees who only need MATH 107 or MATH 131 or MATH 132 to earn their degrees, and who are not big fans of algebra, and they need Intermediate Algebra, it might be wise for them to wait to take the new MATH 97, , next Fall—assuming we get final approval for the course from the state.  Any questions should be directed to Jeff Koskela, Tom Kuester, or Lynn Siedenstrang.

The description for Math 107 in the Spring Schedule says it satisfies the area F science distribution requirement.  Math 107 doesn’t satisfy that requirement and that will be changed in the next catalogue description.  In the meantime advisors should know this.

From the Native American Student Services Office

You may have noticed some new courses in recent bulletins, such as Anth 220 Pacific NE Coast Peoples and Anth& 204 Archaeology. These courses are offered online as part of our recently added Reservation Based AA degree program.  This program follows a set curriculum and is a partnership venture with The Evergreen State College, Washington Online, and several NW Indian Tribes. Students who are not part of this program are eligible to take the classes offered in the bulletin. They satisfy specified elective requirements for the AA degree. For more information, contact Mark Ramon.

From the Humanities Division

Prerequisite overrides and “instructor permission only” courses

Listed below are the instructions for prerequisite overrides as well as “instructor permission only” courses.

  • Students selecting “instructor permission only” courses will need a course entry code in order to register.

  • Students who want to have a prerequisite override on a particular class will need a course entry code from the instructor.

  • Instructors will be given entry codes for each course they teach if the course has a prerequisite or requires instructor permission.

  • Students who wish to register for a class for which they do not meet the prerequisites or that requires instructor permission will need to see the instructor of the class.

  • Professional/Technical instructors require instructor permission for all their courses so every student registering needs a course entry code.

  • All courses (night and day, on campus and off campus) will be included in this system.
