Reference Resources:
We have
a number of sources on line, available from our homepage ( you will be asked
to login with your last name and Student ID number.) For reference
books not available on line, contact the reference desk and we
will work with you to get an answer to your question. (more....)
Journal articles:
You
can get articles from our online services, and from our print
collection. For
either type you start at our homepage. Select the
top middle pull-down menu, and use the databases you see there.
(You will need to login with a current Student ID number, and
your last name.) These databases are indexes to periodical articles,
searchable by topic, and will give you two kinds of results:
either the entire article (which you can then either read online
or print,) or a summary only. See the section on "getting items"
down below for what to do in that 2d case! Need help? You will
find descriptions of the different journal databases here, or don't hesitate
to contact us!
Books
and AV:
Go to our homepage, pull down the top
left menu, and select "GHC Library Catalog." The resulting page
will allow you to search for books, AV materials, or journal
titles (NOT journal articles) in our catalog. Need help?
Use the catalog's tutorial.
One
activity you can't do from a distance, is to browse the shelves.
However, you can use the on-line catalog to come close since
you can browse by call number. One of the easest ways to do this
is start from a book you already know, then click on its call
number!
Getting
items:
Just because a book or article isn't online, doesn't mean
you can't use it! For
books in our collection: if you have found the book in our library catalog, you can click on the request
item button, and then fill in the information on the form
that comes up. We will ship the item to the location you
indicate. If you cannot get to an outreach
center, just contact us and we will work with you and your specific
circumstance.
For
journal articles, first go to the "LIST OF GHC'S JOURNALS--
for off campus use"
selection in the top middle pull down menu of our homepage. This will tell
you if the journal is available in one of our other databases,
or if we subscribe to the print version. If you find it there,
then click on the link and you will either be connected to that
other database or to our catalog (where you can request
item just
as you would for a book or video.)
to a tutorial on requesting something from our catalog.
Interlibrary Loan:
ILL
is when we borrow a book, or get a photocopy of an article, from
another library. Usually this happens when you have used the Internet
to search another library's catalog, and then find something you'd
like to use; or, you have searched one of our journal databases
and find the article is not available online or from our own library
collection. (more.....)
