Perhaps you are aware
that the GHCF has funded 10 full-tuition scholarships for many years.
Perhaps you also realize that the Foundation contributed $100,000 to the
renovation of the GHC Riverview Education Center,
located in Raymond. Additionally, it may be old news to you, but the Foundation
also provides the money associated with the Classified Staff and Administrator
Excellence Awards and manages the funds for the Faculty Excellence
Awards.
In addition to the
10 full-tuition scholarships we offer to incoming students (two of which
are earmarked for GED graduates registering for College classes), we now
provide nine $200 athletic scholarships (the maximum
scholarship amount allowed per quarter under NWAACC rules).
What you are probably
not aware of, however, are the many new initiatives the Foundation has
adopted within the past year. Below you will find a brief description
of the numerous ways the Foundation supports GHC and its students.
James
Sterling Hispanic Student Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to students residing in Grays Harbor
County and enrolling at Grays Harbor College whose immediate family emigrated
from Mexico or Central America. The award covers tuition and related expenses
for one academic year. Student may be enrolled in a course of study leading
to a four-year professional degree, a two-year vocational degree or a
vocational certificate. Selection is primarily based on the applicant's
desire to succeed and become a contributing member of the community and
the applicant's financial need. Academic performance is not the prime
consideration.

Harbor College Foundation Office with a copy of your most current transcript.
Do not staple any pages. You must give the Letters of Reference to two
individuals of your choice other than relatives or friends. The letters

The James and Vera Stewart Scholarship
James and Vera Stewart established this scholarship to recognize academic
performance, good character and leadership ability. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart
believe that since the timber industry created the dollars that make this
fund possible, those who are considered for a scholarship should be familiar
with the tremendous benefits that the timber industry provides the citizens
of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties. Therefore, each applicant must write
a one-to two-page essay explaining the benefits of the timber industry
to the area.

The
UMAR Student Emergency Fund
This fund was established by Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim to honor his father,
Mr. Umar Ibrahim. The Foundation Board of Directors recently voted to
contribute an additional $1,000 to the fund. The fund's purpose
is to provide emergency financial assistance to students attending Grays
Harbor College. Assistance will be provided in the form of a grant to
the student or as direct payment to a service provider or retailer. Each
grant, not to exceed $250, will be awarded with no expectation of being
repaid. Examples of types of emergencies funded: helping deal with the
death of a parent or family member, house fire, medical issues, assistance
with temporary housing for a student left homeless, etc. Applications
for requesting disbursements shall be submitted to the Vice President
for Student Services office, which will screen the requests.
Application Process: A student may pick up an application
form from the Financial Aid Office. The completed form should be delivered
to the VP for Student Services Office. The VP, with input from faculty,
staff or the President, may approve the application. The VP will confer
with the Foundation office and notify the student when a check may be
picked up.
The Victor H. Grinich Memorial Scholarship
The family of Dr. Grinich established this fund to provide full-tuition
scholarships to two students residing within the College district who
are pursuing a degree in math, astronomy, science or engineering.
The
Aberdeen Rotary Club Carole Hunt Memorial Scholarship
This fund provides a full-tuition scholarship to a student from Aberdeen
that demonstrates scholarship and need.
The
Orkney Student Emergency Book Loan Fund
The purpose of this fund is to provide emergency financial assistance
to students attending Grays Harbor College. Assistance will be provided
in the form of a loan for students to purchase textbooks at the Grays
Harbor College Bookstore. The loan, not to exceed $200, will be awarded
with the expectation of being repaid by the end of the school quarter.
Requests for textbook loans shall be submitted to the Vice President
for Student Services office, which will screen the requests.
Application Process: A student may pick up an application form
from the V.P. for Student Services Office. The student will return
the completed form to the V.P. for Student Services Office. The
V.P. may approve the application. The V.P. will notify the student and
the Bookstore that a textbook loan has been approved. The student will
charge the textbooks at the bookstore and will also repay the loan at
the bookstore.
This fund was made possible from a gift to the Grays Harbor College Foundation
included in the estate of Mrs. Jerry Orkney.
World
Class Scholars Scholarship Program
Perhaps the Foundation's most high profile program is the successful World
Class Scholars Scholarship Program. This year, 68 students attended
GHC as World Class Scholars and received scholarship assistance up to
$750. That award, available to students meeting certain academic standards,
was available to first and second year students. For those of you unacquainted
with the World Class Scholars Program, it is an incentive program for
7th - 12th graders in all area school districts, encouraging them to do
their best in school, plan ahead past graduation and to think GHC! More
than 1000 students are participating in this scholarship program.
In addition to these
scholarships, the Foundation manages many other scholarship funds. Those
funds include the Bertha & A.J. Hillier Memorial Scholarship Fund,
the Rhea Pinckney Memorial Scholarship Fund (Chapter BC, P.E.O. Sisterhood),
The Gloria Seguin Memorial Scholarship Fund, The Stewart Family Educational
Fund, The Ruth West Scholarship Fund, The Peter and Marie Schafer Memorial
Scholarship Fund, The Easter Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Associated
Students of Grays Harbor College Scholarship Fund.
In the years ahead, the Foundation Board will continue to provide support
to GHC and remain responsive to emerging needs.
