Responsibility of a Student Employee

The opportunity for a student to work is a fundamental part of the college’s philosophy and goals.  Participation in the work study program is voluntary.  Every student is urged to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about work, and through work, add to the total educational experience.

Student participation in the work study program includes the following responsibilities.

Absences — Notify the supervisor in advance whenever it is necessary to be absent from work.

Adhere to Policies — Abide by the policies, rules and guidelines established by the department.  If a student wants, or needs, to make changes in his/her work schedule, transfer from or terminate the program, he/she should immediately discuss the matter with the supervisor.

Safety Rules — Follow all departmental and campus rules concerning safety while on the job.  Safety is vital in every operation on campus.

Inform Supervisor — Keep supervisors notified well ahead of intentions to work, or not to work, during each succeeding quarter.

Before you begin work you . . .

· Must get referral paperwork from the Job Placement office and take it to the Financial Aid office.

· Must have a signed Work Study Authorization form from the Financial Aid Office.  If hired, the bottom portion of the form is signed by your supervisor and returned to the Financial Aid Office.

· Must go to the Library to view the videos on blood borne pathogens and hazardous workplace materials.

The following paperwork must be completed before you can receive your first paycheck.  Return items to the Human Resource Office:

· I-9*

· W-4

· Certification that you have viewed the videos on blood borne pathogens and hazardous workplace materials.

*Proper ID is needed to complete the I-9.  The most commonly used forms are Social Security card and Driver’s License.

Is this a real job?
Yes, you will be working with career employees, and there are real operational functions that you will be supporting. It is important for you to remember that, as an employee, you represent your employer and the college.

What am I expected to wear at work?
You are expected to dress neatly, cleanly and within reasonable limits appropriate to your work environment. You should clarify specifics with your supervisor.

Confidentiality and privacy
Grays Harbor College limits student information that employees can release without written permission or subpoena (in accordance with FERPA). The release or misuse of confidential information is grounds for immediate dismissal. When in doubt, consult your supervisor.
