Specially for Faculty

The Library and Media Center provides many resources for faculty members, both for your professional improvement and for course support. Feel free to contact us with any questions!

The Library and the Media Services Lab are on two different floors of the 1500 building; they maintain separate operating hours.  These hours vary during break times, so check our website carefully.  The website, and the resources it makes available, are 24x7 services.

Library Services:

·         Information skills instruction

o   What is Information Literacy?

o   Desired Student Ability #5 incorporates Information Literacy as one of the key college educational goals: “Skills in accessing and evaluating resources, awareness of the role of information resources in making sound decisions, and command of the skills required to use appropriate technologies effectively.”

o   Information Literacy Action Plan

§  The library has developed a draft Action Plan for increasing Information Literacy across the curriculum.

o   Library orientations

§  The librarians would be more than happy to speak to your classes regarding use of the library’s resources. Tailored presentations help make the experience meaningful for the students.

§   Contact Adrienne Roush at x4053 or aroush@ghc.edu

·         Library Resources

o   What does the library own?

§  To find books, videos, DVDS etc. owned by the library, search the library catalog available from the library web site. For help using the catalog, you can view the tutorial or ask a librarian.

o   If you would like the library to purchase materials to support your curriculum, please contact Adrienne Roush x4053 or aroush@ghc.edu.

§  Our Collection Development Policy and Administrative Procedure will help explain the guidelines we use for purchases.

§  Resources housed in the library are purchased from the library’s budget, not the division budget.

§  The budget is finite, of course, so any materials requested but not purchased during a fiscal year will be held over until the new budget takes effect.  For extremely expensive items we may seek contributions from other departments.

o   Using the web page to access articles:

§  The library subscribes to a number of magazine, newspaper and journal databases. There are also specialty database for topics such as art, literature and criminal justice. View the list for descriptions of the different resources.

§  Library databases can be accessed from any Internet connection, on or off campus, any time of the day or night. For off-campus access, your staff ID number and last name must be entered.

·         Course reserves

o   Faculty may place materials on hold in the library for their students to use, with check-out restrictions chosen by the instructor.  Available options include library use only, overnight checkout, or 3-day checkout.

o   Reserve materials may be resources owned by the library or brought in by the instructor. Many faculty choose to place books, samples of papers, projects or tests on reserve, or even computer applications loaded on a laptop.

o   The library also has space on our web site for reserves held electronically. This might include copies of notes, web sites or online readings—including links to journal articles in our databases.

·         Interlibrary loan

o   Contact the reference librarian (x4054) if you wish us to obtain something from another library.   There is no charge to you or your division for this service.

·         Off-campus faculty

o   Please refer to the Off-campus users page

o   In addition, we can work with the local site coordinator/study leader to help deliver services or loaned items to you or your students.  Contact us with any questions or requests!

·         Video taping facility: We have one dedicated study room equipped with a wall-mounted video camera.

o   Reservations of the room are made on a clip-board at the circulation desk.

o   Students can video tape themselves practicing speeches, plays, mock interviews etc.

·         Copyright compliance advice

o   There is much misunderstanding on what is allowed under US copyright law, and interpretations are often changing anyway.  You are advised to check with Stan Horton (X4051 or shorton@ghc.edu) before making any copies of any published materials.

Art Gallery:

·         The art gallery in the main foyer and lower hall of the 1500 building exists to allow our students to experience the visual arts, and to support artistic endeavors in our community.

·         The art gallery website contains archives of past shows.

·         Contact Stan Horton (x4051 or shorton@ghc.edu) for availability of display dates.

Media Services:

·         Media Services supports the use of media technologies across the entire GHC community.  This includes use for instruction and for public presentations hosted by all offices of the college.  With the exception of the Manspeaker Instruction Building, Media Services is responsible for  all AV equipment you will find in any classroom on the various campuses.  (For MIB support, please contact Rich Wenke, x4056, rwenke@ghc.edu, or at his office, room #2316.)

·         Problems with AV equipment (except for MIB!)  phone Media Lab at x4057; if no answer and you need immediate assistance, call the library main number at x4050.

·         The Media Lab itself is located in room 1514.  It hosts 5 PC’s and one Mac, offering high-end media production software (Adobe Premier and Pinnacle 9 for video editing, Photoshop for still photos, web page authoring with MS Expressions, all the usual Microsoft products, etc.)  It also has a large layout table for physical posters, and offers color and black and white printing.  It is available for both student and faculty/staff use.

·         Laminating: the Media Lab has a 24 inch wide roll laminating press.  It takes about 15 minutes to heat up, so feel free to call ahead if you are in a hurry.  Or, you can leave the materials there for our staff to do later.

·         AV equipment for loan: may be used by faculty or students to support assignments, for classroom use, and for public presentation use.  We offer digital still and video cameras; TV’s; VCR’s and DVD players; portable data projectors; overhead, movie, slide and opaque projectors; projection screens; microphones; and miscellaneous cables.

·         Copying of AV materials: we can duplicate audio cassette tapes, VHS, CD’s and DVD’s, and transfer VHS to DVD.  Multiple copies can be done.  Copyright is a major issue for any copying, so be certain to discuss this aspect with staff.

·         Video taping events: we regularly record classes and various presentations on campus.  However, staffing levels restrict when we can do and not do this.  Please call as much in advance as possible so we can adjust schedules if necessary—or consider what to do if we cannot meet this request.

·         Setups (microphones, speakers, projectors, etc.) for events: call Media Lab
