Although it's Summer, we are working on new products to help with your research needs! We've made improvements in our on-line Health, Education, and News Media resources. Details:
Health: PubMed, an index/abstract service produced by the National Library of Medicine, (1) is now included on our "Search for Information" page, and (2) includes links from PubMed's entries to journals available from the Spellman Library.
Education: ERIC (Education Resource Information Center), another US government sponsored database, is similarly included in our listings, and similarly linked to titles available to you from our library.
News Media: we are beta testing an expanded version of America's Newspapers, called Access World News (Research Collection.) It provides online access to local, in-state, national and international news sources, including newspapers, broadcast transcripts, newswires, news blogs, web-only news content and video. Alerts and "my personal" functionality will help you track and manage your research projects.
Works by Lindell Stacy-Horton will be on display in the Spellman Library's gallery through October 23. Join us for the opening reception this Friday, Sept. 26 from 6-8pm!
World renowned science-fiction/fantasy author Ursula K. LeGuin will be
visiting the Harbor in late September and early October, as part of the Timberland
Regional Library program
"Timberland Reads Together. A particular highlight will
be on October 9, when she appears at Aberdeen High School from 7:00-9:00 pm.
GHC students can find information about LeGuin and her works in several of our
databases:
Contemporary Authors gives a short
biographical background and list of her works;
Contemporary Literary Criticism gives articles about her works themselves.
And of course, fans can always visit LeGuin's own
website.
Photographs from our Photography classes students are now showing in the library's gallery.
Access to library databases both on and off campus is now fully restored. Thanks for your patience!
Correction: apparently off-campus access is not working universally at this time. The library will stay open past its scheduled closing time today, Monday, to provide on-campus access for those of you with deadlines looming. At this time we are planning to close at 6pm, but please phone the main number at 538-4050 if you need a later closing time.
Our apologies to all GHC students who could not access the library databases since last Wednesday morning. The main system board on our authentication server died, taking with it the software used to route traffic to the databases. Both hardware and software repairs were required and have been completed as of this morning.
The GHC student art show will be on exhibit through the end of Spring Quarter, with drawings, paintings, graphics, and 3-dimensional items on display.
The annual High School Art Show is on display through May 14, This year we exhibit 195 individual works from Aberdeen, Elma, Harbor, Hoquiam, Montesano, North River and Ocosta High Schools. Join us Thursday, May 1, from 6-7 pm in the gallery for the announcement of awards to the artists.
Want to find directories of various types of financial aid opportunities that are available? Go to the library catalog and enter the term "student aid" in the search box. (Be sure to select a SUBJECT search if that is not already selected.)
Effective the first day of classes for Spring Quarter, the library webpage will get a new look and improved functions. Some of the new features include:
Our electronic reserves page will expand to include easy access to GHC instructor and class websites
Online access to subject guides to help you get started on your research
Improved handling of our popular chat reference service: it will now open in a separate window so we don't lose contact when we guide you to a new page!
More prominent links to the Art Gallery and to Media Lab information
Contact Stan Horton, (shorton@ghc.edu) with comments or suggestions.
Library hours over Spring Break will be Monday-Friday, 10am-2pm, for convenience of WAOL students-- and anyone else who wishes! We will be closed weekends, and will resume regular hours Monday, 4/7/2008.
Library 101 will meet 3 days per week from April 7 to May 22, so you can learn the research skills you need BEFORE that term paper in your other class is due! (That also leaves you with one less class for the last 3 weeks of the quarter.)
Take a look at the website for the Winter class, then register for Spring! Meets M/T/Th 11-11:50am, room 1520, 2 credits, line number #B794.
