A prerequisite is a requirement which a student must meet prior to enrolling in a particular course.
Completing a particular course or obtaining a minimum score on a placement exam may be required.
Prerequisites for courses are listed in both the Schedule of Classes and the Grays Harbor College Catalog.

A credit is a value given to each course we offer.
A five credit lecture class will require you to be in class five hours per week.
The typical full-time student takes 10-15 credits per quarter and spends at least 40 hours per week on school and homework.
To collect full financial aid a student must take 12 credits or more.
Adult Basic Education credits don't count towards financial aid nor do they count towards a degree or certificate.
There are also credit bearing courses which don't apply to degree programs. Check with your advisor.

A catalog is a publication describing academic programs, student services, general regulations, requirements, and procedures.
All courses offered by the college are described in this book.

A schedule of classes is published prior to each academic quarter (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer).
It contains a listing of the courses offered that particular quarter, the times and days they are offered, location of each class, and the instructor's name.

A quarter is a measure of an academic term.
We have three regular quarters (Fall, Winter, and Spring) comprised of 10 weeks of instruction and one week of finals.
Our Summer quarter is unique because credit requirements are condensed into six weeks, requiring an increased workload within a shorter amount of time when compared to a regular quarter.

An advisor is the faculty member to whom you are assigned for registration.
In some cases this person is assigned to you because of their experience in a particular area.
This is the person you see if you need help choosing your courses, for changing your schedule, or for general transfer information.

Counselors are faculty members who are trained professionals in counseling.
These are the people to see when you have a problem that is affecting your ability to succeed in college (academic or personal).
Counselors can help you assess and clarify your career goals and direction.
They will also help you with choosing courses, changing your schedule, and provide you with specific transfer information about other colleges.
