"The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence."

Today Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territories, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, United Arab Emirates and Palau. The innovative programs and services and array of membership benefits offered by Phi Theta Kappa are unequaled among honor societies.

Phi Theta Kappa's mission is two-fold: 1) recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and (2) provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming. Co-curricular programs focus upon the Society's Hallmark of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. It is estimated that 200,000 students participate in Phi Theta Kappa programs each year. Tuesday, April 5, at 1:00 in room 2250, Bonnie Buratti from NASA's
Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech will be speaking on "Titan: an Earth in
Deep Freeze."

A giant moon in orbit around Saturn seems an unlikely place for Earth-like
processes to be occurring. But that is exactly what is happening on Titan.
The only moon with a thick atmosphere, Titan has lakes, clouds, windstorms
and dunes, floods and flowing rivers, and perhaps volcanoes and a subsurface water ocean.

This talk is an overview of recent discoveries about Titan from the Cassini
spacecraft and what this cold moon in the outer reaches of the Solar System
can teach us about the Earth. It is intended to be understandable to a
general audience.

Bonnie J. Buratti received a doctorate in astronomy and space sciences from
Cornell University and is currently a senior research scientist at NASA's
Jet Propulsion Laboratory. With expertise on the formation and evolution of
the small icy bodies in the outer Solar System, she has taken leadership
roles on the Cassini Mission to Saturn and the New Horizons Mission to Pluto (the demoted planet). She has served in an advisory capacity on NASA
committees and was awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal for her work on Cassini.

Description - When a performer grows up in the spotlight, it's often hard for public perception to mature along with them.Some people still picture LeAnn Rimes as the pretty teenager with the incredible voice who first burst on the national scene with the hit "Blue." In reality, LeAnn Rimes is so much more. As an artist, she's matured into a songwriter of considerable depth and as a vocalist; she's grown into her gift in an even more impressive way. She has written children books, acted in film and on television and has become a musical icon both in the U.S. and in Europe. LeAnn has become confident enough as a songwriter to pitch tunes to other artists and has songs being considered by Faith Hill and Jamie O'Neal. Along the way, the little girl with the big voice has matured into a woman.

There is a healthy community discussion underway about how to protect the spectacular ancient forest and river watersheds we all love for the clean water, recreation and salmon we all need.

We are collecting community feedback on a draft plan to safeguard healthy watersheds on Olympic National Forest such as South Quinault Ridge and the West Fork of the Humptulips River. These wild forest and river watersheds provide clean water, fish and wildlife habitat and World-Class outdoor recreation opportunities. As we develop the plan, we are also working to protect and improve recreation access and use to ensure current and future generations can continue to hunt, fish, hike and enjoy these natural treasures. But we can't do that without hearing from you.

Earth Day Celebration

Students at Grays Harbor College will observe Earth Day on Monday, April 25, with a variety of activities planned on the main campus in Aberdeen.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 25, students enrolled in various GHC programs will showcase projects that they have completed during the year. In addition, tree planting and other restoration projects will take place along the College�s Lake Swano trails. In the HUB, starting at 10:30 a.m. and continuing until 2 p.m., the annual Sustainability Fair will occur featuring local businesses, projects and suggestions of how individuals can be more sustainable.

The College�s Sustainability Committee is also planning a clothing exchange in the HUB and Earth Day-related films will be shown during the day in the Fireside Room. Projects along the Lake Swano trails will include picking up litter, spreading woodchips on the trails and planting trees, all organized by students in the Coastal Resources Learning Center and Forestry
programs.

The day�s activities will involve more than 150 younger students from area school districts, plus GHC students, faculty and staff, plus community members. The public is invited to participate in all of the GHC Earth Day activities. There is no admission charge. This year, sustainability and service learning activities at GHC are supported by the Washington Campus Compact Northwest Sustainability Initiative. Members of Phi Theta Kappa may apply for more than $36 million in transfer scholarships, provided exclusively to Society members by more than 600 senior institutions.
Enrollment in The Transfer Database, used by hundreds of senior colleges and universities to recruit Phi Theta Kappa transfer students.
Letter of recommendation sent to a college admissions counselor, scholarship official or potential employer.
Golden Key Membership Pin, Certificate of Membership, and a wallet-size Identification Card.
Members of Phi Theta Kappa may affix the Society�s Gold Diploma Seal, denoting Society membership, to their two-year college diploma.
Members of Phi Theta Kappa may have their membership in the international honor society noted on their transcript, contingent on their college�s policy.
Members of Phi Theta Kappa may wear the Society�s golden monogrammed Honors Stole and Tassel, at college commencement exercises, available through purchase, contingent on college policy.

Students are invited to attend a meeting with Accreditation Evaluation Team members on Wednesday, April 27, 2011.

The meeting will be held from 2:00-3:00PM in MIB Room 2416.

Grays Harbor College is scheduled for a Full-Scale Accreditation Evaluation April 27-29, 2011, by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the regional accreditation organization.

Institutions accredited or pre-accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities are required to examine their own missions, goals, operations, and achievements (See: Comprehensive Self-Evaluation Report, 2011). The process then provides expert analysis by peer evaluators, and, later, commendations for accomplishments and recommendations for improvement from the accrediting body. Since the accreditation status of an institution is reviewed periodically, institutions are encouraged toward continued self-evaluation and improvement.
