Margo Hood was scrolling through Twitter on Sunday morning when a tweet from Seattle Seahawks wide receiver, Tyler Lockett, caught her eye. It read, “I’ve teamed up with Safeway for the Man of the Year Challenge! In 24hrs 1 person who retweets this will be selected to choose a hunger relief org in the state of Washington that will receive a $16,000 grant from Safeway!”
Hood retweeted Lockett’s tweet, adding that there was a need in Grays Harbor and at the college food pantry. The next day Locket responded; Hood won.
Hood is the administrative assistant for the VP for Student Services at Grays Harbor College and selected the college’s food pantry to receive the grant. Hood said when she saw Lockett’s tweet she thought it would be a “wonderful opportunity” for the campus and community.
Harbor Landing Food Pantry works in partnership with the Associated Students of Grays Harbor College, the Grays Harbor College Foundation, and Coastal Harvest to provide nutritious food to students and members of the community. Its mission is to “lessen the food insecure population both on campus and in the surrounding community, so that students may be able to focus more on their studies and less on hunger.”
Lockett announced the winning organization on Twitter in a tweet that read, “Congrats to @ghcollegewa food bank for being selected for the @Safeway grant of $16,000. Since 6 in 10 community college students struggle with hunger, and Grays Harbor County has a 14% food insecurity rate, I know this support is needed and thank @MargoBr15 for nominating them.”
“What a blessing and I still can’t believe I was chosen! This will impact our students and community in a positive way,” said Hood.
