On August 19, Grays Harbor College honored 97 graduates during a commencement ceremony at Stafford Creek Corrections Center (SCCC). Over the past six months, students at Stafford Creek earned 123 educational certificates and degrees, including High School Equivalency (GED), High School Diploma, Construction Trades Apprenticeship, Welding Technology, Associate of Applied Science in Business Management, and Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement credentials. 21 graduates were recognized as President’s Scholars, an honor reserved for associate degree students who achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

GHC also recognized two students who completed the Blackstone Correspondence Paralegal Program, and The Evergreen State College (TESC) recognized 14 graduates earning bachelor’s degrees.

In her opening remarks, GHC President Dr. Carli Schiffner praised graduates for their perseverance and determination in reaching this achievement and highlighted the strong network of support surrounding them.

“You have cleared important milestones in the face of many obstacles,” Dr. Schiffner said. “Your success is a testament to your perseverance and determination. You are setting an example, providing hope, and changing the course of your lives and your families’ lives. As you celebrate today, know that you are surrounded by people who believe in you, are proud of you, and support your continued success.”

Graduates were joined by family members, friends, community leaders, corrections officials, and higher education partners for the celebration. Attendees included 19th District Legislative Representatives Joel McEntire and Jim Walsh; Department of Corrections Associate Superintendent of Programs Stephanie Bloomingdale; Director of Correctional Industries Jamie Dolan; representatives from the Washington State Department of Corrections and the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges; GHC Trustees Dr. Paula Akerlund and Jim Sayce; and members of GHC, SCCC, and TESC leadership, faculty, and staff.

During the ceremony, class speakers Manuel A., Devin H., Kyle M., and William M. shared reflections on their educational journeys and what earning their credentials at Stafford Creek meant to them. Their remarks highlighted the common themes of courage, persistence, and personal growth.

Graduates were then recognized by the faculty and staff who supported them throughout their studies. Professor Justin Kautzman and instructors Dr. Kortney Stern and Geoffrey Fogleman presented high school diplomas; Professor Scott Melton recognized Welding Technology graduates; Associate Dean of Corrections Nick Brock honored Construction Trades Apprenticeship graduates; and Professors Lance James and Donald Burke awarded degrees to graduates of GHC’s associate degree programs.

Following the ceremony, Dr. Schiffner expressed her appreciation for the GHC faculty and staff who support students at Stafford Creek. “Thank you to Lance, Donald, Geoff, Justin, Kelly, Scott, Kortney, Codi Jo, Lyn, Dan, Kari, Michael, Felicia, Anthony, Nate, Lori, Teresa, Paula, Nick, Elsa, Heidi, and Will for your commitment to serving all of our students in Grays Harbor College’s district.”
