Summary Job Description
The Grounds & Campus Maintenance Assistant supports the Grounds Department in maintaining safe, attractive, and functional outdoor spaces across campus. This position provides students with hands‑on experience in grounds maintenance and horticulture while developing transferable workplace skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, and responsibility. Students work under direct supervision in a supportive, educational environment that prioritizes safety and learning.
Typical Duties
- Assist with routine grounds maintenance such as weeding, pruning, planting, mulching, and litter removal
- Support seasonal landscaping tasks including garden bed preparation and campus beautification projects
- Operate basic hand tools and grounds equipment under supervision and with proper safety training
- Assist with greenhouse, nursery, or garden maintenance as assigned
- Follow safety guidelines and proper procedures for tools and equipment
- Work collaboratively with Grounds staff and other student employees
- Complete assigned tasks reliably and communicate progress or concerns to the supervisor
Duties are adjusted based on student experience, skill level, and academic schedule.
Qualifications
- Interest in outdoor work, landscaping, horticulture, or environmental stewardship
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely as part of a team
- Willingness to learn new skills and take direction
- Dependable, punctual, and responsible
- Ability to perform light to moderate physical labor outdoors in varying weather conditions
- No prior grounds experience required; training provided
