Textbooks for classroom use are selected by instructors and in consultation with divisional colleagues. Textbooks should be chosen based on their contribution to high quality content delivery and educational experiences and should align with best practices in teaching the appropriate discipline as well as aiding in meeting course outcomes. Part-time faculty members should consult with full-time faculty members in choosing texts whenever possible.
Faculty are strongly encouraged to make every effort to reduce the costs of textbooks and other course materials for students when making selections, including consideration of using open educational resources (OERs) when appropriate. Criteria include the likelihood of using course materials in their profession during their coursework and/or after graduation; the availability of OERs that are comparable to available texts; the financial burden placed on students by the cost of attending college and acquiring materials required at faculty discretion; and consideration of what materials are being used by peers at GHC and at other SBCTC institutions.
