Student Art & Photography Contest

2018 Scenes from Campus Student Art Contest

Submissions are due by 4:00 PM, Thursday May 31st, 2018.

Art Theme: Scenes from Campus

What do you visualize when you think of GHC? Friends having lunch in the cafeteria? Classmates adding chemicals to a test tube? Our mutable Washington skies behind the architecture of the Schermer building? Actors on the Bishop Center stage? The pattern of sparks thrown by a classmate welding? The waters of Lake Swano peeking through the trees as you hike the trail? A class’s imagination being ignited by a shared reading?

We want to see GHC through your eyes.

Paint, draw, sketch, photograph or otherwise artistically represent a Scene from Campus that you think best represents GHC and would tell a visitor about the opportunities and experiences that GHC offers its students.

Student Voices

As part of its accreditation process, GHC is writing a self-study report that represents our college to our peer institutions. It is important to us to include student voices in this document, and one of the ways we want to do this is through the inclusion of student artwork.

Contest Criteria

For full criteria, see the Art Contest Entry Form. Here are the basics:

Who can participate?

  • This contest is open to all Grays Harbor College students who enrolled in the 2017-18 academic year.

What is the theme?

  • Entries should follow the theme of Scenes from Campus but are otherwise left up to the artist’s imagination. (See the blurb at the top or the FAQ below for more information.)
  • Entries must be acceptable to an all-ages audience.

What kind of media can I use?

  • Entries may be almost any form of 2-dimensional media (e.g. painting, sketch, photography, digital photography, etc.).
    • Due to potential copyright issues we cannot accept a collage using materials from magazines, newspapers, or other printed sources. A collage made from neutral sources such as craft paper and fabric would be okay. Such a piece should be reasonably 2-dimensional.
  • Entries should be 8.5” x 11” in size, and should be oriented vertically on the page (portrait).

What else should I know?

  • Entries may be chosen for use as Chapter Headers in the upcoming Year Seven Accreditation Report. These entries will have a chapter template over the top of the image. Please make sure that essential parts of your submission are not cut off by the template

The Fine Print

The winning entry will be included as an example of student art in GHC’s upcoming Year Seven Accreditation report. Other entries may be chosen for inclusion but are not guaranteed. Your submission of artwork to the contest grants a limited license to Grays Harbor College to use your artwork in the GHC Year Seven Report to be published in 2018-19, in materials related to the year Seven Report (both physical and electronic), and in a public display on campus. Artwork will be credited whenever it is used. Artwork will not be used elsewhere without additional written permission from the artist. See Entry Form for full details or contact Matt Edwards with questions.

1st, 2nd, & 3rd Place will be chosen by a contest committee.

The Campus Favorite will be voted on by GHC Students, Faculty, & Staff.

FAQ

  • Can you give more examples of what you mean by Scenes from Campus?
    • We’re being a little vague because we want student imagination to shine, but to broaden it a little, we want to see GHC through our student’s eyes. To us, this means both “beauty shots” of campus and campus life, combined with visualizations of positive student experiences.

To expand on the latter a little: “A drawing of students at desks in the temperate rainforest or the middle of a Shakespeare play because the instructor’s lecture on that particular topic has been so evocative that it took them there, would be perfectly acceptable.

The examples we’ve provided are truly that: examples. We truly want to see the campus through your eyes, and we hope you surprise us with ideas we haven’t even considered.

  • Can I submit a 2-D photograph of a 3-D artwork, such as a sculpture?
    • Yes, however the photograph, not the sculpture, would be your submission.

If you have a question that isn’t answered here, please contact Matt Edwards at matt.edwards@ghc.edu. If you have a question, someone else might too!
