Course Description:
This lecture, laboratory and field course includes the study of Pacific Northwest finfish and shellfish. Classification and identification, anatomy and physiology, age and growth, reporduction, and behavior are major elements of the course. Emphasis is on local fish species of commercial and recreational importance. Satisfies the science distribution area C requirement or specified elective for the AA degree.
Course Prerequisites:
Perequisites: College level math, at least one college level science course.
Course Outcomes:
• Identify major species of Pacific Northwest finfish and shellfish
• Key and classify major finfish and shellfish species
• Distinguish the major external and internal anatomical features of fishes and shellfish
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of major fish physiological systems including: integument, skeletal, brain and nervous system, respiratory, urogenital, circulatory and muscular
• Apply theoretical knowledge to stream typing surveys
• Collect, sort, and spawn salmonid species
• Perform a literature search and apply learning to a written and oral report
