Athletics Update

It was a great weekend for Grays Harbor College Athletics. Each team was successful this past weekend.
Women’s Wrestling
Women's Wrestling took center stage at the Bishop Center on the campus at Grays Harbor College on Saturday. Although there were no complete team scores, the Chokers shined bright in taking 9 of 11 matches in the first round. Pins recorded by Nina Pham, Sophie Hernandez, Alexis Morfin, Desiree Zavala, Patricia Escobar, and Deni Kroeze and Technical Fall 10-0 victories by Ronna Heaton and Paige Baynes led the Chokers in that first round of action. Round 2 highlights for the Chokers included a pin by Cassandra Parra, and victories by Deni Kroeze, Carla Sanchez, and Nina Pham.
We also had the drawing for our raffle for the trip to Hawaii. The winner was Tammera Walker of Aberdeen. Congrats to Tammera!
Choker Volleyball traveled to Olympia Friday night for a Western Conference matchup with the South Puget Sound Clippers. They came away with a 3-0 win. That win finds them now in a tie for second place in the conference with Lower Columbia College, one game behind Pierce College. Led by Brooke Spoor's 14 kills, Savanna Davis's 13 kills, and Sara Caraveo's 35 assists, the Chokers won three straight (25-20), (25-23), and (25-26). The Chokers host Centralia Community College Wednesday night at Sam Benn Gym. Start time is 7pm.
Women’s Soccer
The Grays Harbor College Women's Soccer team notched their first win of the season, downing the Green River Gators 2-1 in a West Division NWAC soccer matchup Saturday night at Wilson Playfield Complex in Kent. All of the scoring was done within the first 33 minutes. Green River took the lead in the 19th minute on a goal scored by Kassy Brazier on an assist from Abbigale Perkins. The Chokers would answer with a goal in the 25th minute by Tayler Housden. Judy Renteria recorded an assist on the goal. in the 33rd minute Renteria scored a goal of her own to give the Chokers the lead for good. Housden assisted on that goal. Housden had 6 shots on goal for the night, and Gabby Vasquez added 2 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jenna Dumont had 3 saves on the night for Grays Harbor. The Chokers led the Gators in shots on goal 17-7. the Chokers close out their home season next Wednesday against Pierce College. Kickoff is scheduled for 12pm at Stewart Field
