Athletics Update
Paige Baynes, National Champion Wrestler

Women’s Wrestling:

I had a chance to attend the National Tournament with the team this past week in Oklahoma City. I am so glad I went to see this group compete. The girls really made a great showing for Grays Harbor College. The team finished tied for 6th place overall in the nation!  For the women, there is only 1 division of collegiate wrestling. To have this group finish this high in the nation against all of these 4 year schools is something very special. I got to witness the passion of all the competitors there, to be the very best. We had 5 wrestlers earn All-American honors. Here is a little about each of them.

Paige Baynes became the National Champion for her 1st place finish. This was her 3rd time being named All-American. She was ranked number 1 going into the tourney and showed why by not allowing any points scored against her in the tourney. After the tourney she was also awarded the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the entire tourney. Pagie had 29 wrestlers in her bracket.

Nina Pham

Desiree Zavala finished in 2nd place. This is her 2nd All-American Honor. She faced Kayla Miracle for the championship, who became a 4 time National Champion. Desiree did score the first takedown which were the only points scored on Miracle all tournament. Desiree had 27 competitors in her bracket.

Women’s Basketball:

The ladies continue on their hot streak this season. They won their 22nd straight game yesterday against the Highline Thunderbirds right here in the Choker Gym. The Chokers are currently ranked #3 in the coaches poll, behind Walla Walla, the team that gave them their only loss, the first game of the season, and unbeaten Umpqua. The final remaining home games for the basketball teams are Saturday the 17th and 24th, beginning at 2:00 pm.

Alexia Thrower leads the conference in scoring at 26.4 points a game, is 2nd in rebounding with 11.5 a game, 3rd in steals with 3.3 a game, and 6th in shooting percentage at 55.9%.

Angela Sikora is averaging 14 points a game, and is 2nd in 3pt field goal percentage at 42%

The coaches have been working hard with their teams and that work is paying off. I know I had announced it before but academically 92 out of 180 athletes had grade point averages over 3.0. Our overall gpa last year for athletics was around 2.4. This fall our overall gpa was over 2.8! Much thanks to the faculty and staff and everyone here at GHC!  GO CHOKERS!
