The Bishop Center's 50th Season Opens on Saturday with Locarno

Get ready for a musical journey like no other! This Saturday, September 30, the Bishop Center for Performing Arts at Grays Harbor College will begin its 50th season with a performance by Locarno, a high-energy fusion band with influences from Mexican traditional music, Afro-Cuban rhythms, Columbia, African soukous, Mexican marimba, Venezuelan joropo, and Brazilian Forro music. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the show starts at 7:30 pm.

Locarno is presented in partnership with the Grays Harbor RISE Coalition. Purchase tickets online, by calling 360-538-4066, or at the Box Office before the show. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for students, and free for those 12 and under.

About the Band

At the helm of Locarno stands Tom Landa, a true musical virtuoso and a JUNO Award-winning musician (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy). Landa’s musical journey began in the heart of Mexico City, where he was born and raised. As a teenager, he relocated to Canada, where he would eventually weave together the rich tapestry of Mexican and Canadian musical traditions.

In 2010, Locarno released 'Una Mas Y Ya Nos Vamos,' a mesmerizing album that blends Son Jarocho-inspired folk tunes with Afro-Cuban rhythms. The album quickly caught fire, receiving a nomination for a Western Canadian Music Award and earning resounding praise from fans and critics alike. In 2016, Locarno dropped 'Luz y Sombra,' their second record, boasting 10 originals and 2 Mexican classics. Under Joey Baker's skilled production, diverse musical styles are seamlessly melded. Locarno’s new album is already making waves with its debut single, ‘Cupido.’

Locarno truly shines on stage. The band’s live shows are musical extravaganzas, with Tom Landa on jaranas and guitars, Kalissa Landa on violin, Robin Layne on marimba, congas, and timbales, Pedro Mota on guitar and vocals, Alex Dyring on bass, Liam MacDonald on drums, congas, and pandero, Jocelyn Waugh on trumpet, and Nick La Rivere on trombone. It's a performance that's bound to leave audiences captivated and craving more.
