Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Thursday, September 15 marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15 each year and celebrates the history and cultural diversity of the Caribbean, Central and South America, Mexico, and Spain.
The national observation began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was expanded to Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988. Hispanic Heritage Month begins in the middle of September to mark the anniversary of El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Guatemala’s independence, followed by Mexico on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21.
According to Governor Jay Inslee’s 2021 Proclamation for National Hispanic Heritage Month, Washington State has grown 10% more diverse since the 2010 Census. The Hispanic community now represents 13.7% of the State’s population, about 10% of the population in Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties, and about 17% of the student population at Grays Harbor College.
As part of our college community, I encourage you to check out the resources about Hispanic Heritage Month that are listed below, seek out resources of your own, and share them with others.
- Watch this short video, Mendez v. Westminster: Desegregating California’s Schools. Sylvia Mendez is a civil rights activist and nurse who, at 8 years old, played a fundamental role in a class action lawsuit that led to the desegregation of California’s schools and set an important precedent for ending segregation in the U.S.
- Visit the Spellman Library’s blog for books, eBooks, and streaming videos to help you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
- Follow RISE Red de Inclusion Solidaridad y Empoderamiento on Facebook as they share local content, resources, and events throughout Hispanic Heritage Month.
As fall quarter began last week, I was proud to see so many students, faculty, staff, and community members come together to create a welcoming environment for all. I encourage you to reflect on one of the themes of Hispanic Heritage Month, “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation," which I feel is applicable to the work that you do every day at GHC—we are stronger together.

El Jueves, 15 de Septiembre marco el empiezo del Mes de La Hispanidad, que corre del 15 de Septiembre al 15 de Octubre cada ano y celebra la historia y cultura diversa del Caribe, Centro y Sur América, México, y España.
La observación empezó como la semana de La Hispanidad en 1968 y fue expandida al Mes de La Hispanidad en 1988. EL Mes de La Hispanidad empieza a mediados del mes de Septiembre para marcar el aniversario de El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica y la independencia de Guatemala, seguido por México el 16 de Septiembre, Chile el 18 de Septiembre, Belice el 21 de Septiembre.
En acuerdo a 2021 Proclamation for National Hispanic Heritage Month, (Proclamación para Nacional Del Mes de La Hispanidad 2021) del Gobernador Jay Inslee el Estado de Washington ha crecido 10% más diverso desde el Censo del 2010. La comunidad Hispana ahora representa 13.7% de la populación del estado, como el 10% de la populación en los condados de Grays Harbor y Pacific, y como 17% de la populación estudiantil en el Colegio Grays Harbor.
Como parte de nuestra comunidad colegial, les sugiero que revisen los materiales sobre el Mes de La Hispanidad que están en la parte siguiente, busque materiales por sí mismo y comparta los con otras personas.

Sylvia Méndez es una activista de derechos civiles y enfermera que a los 8 años de edad jugo un papel fundamental en una demanda que dio paso a la desegregación en las escuelas de California e impuso un importante precedente para por le un fin a la segregación en los U.S.
- Visite la librería Spellman Library’s blog para los materiales como libros, eBooks, e videos que te puedan ayudar a celebrar El Mes de La Hispanidad.
- Sigue la página de RISE Red de Inclusión Solidaridad y Empoderamiento en Facebook y mira como comparten información local, recursos y eventos durante El Mes de la Hispanidad.
En lo que se inició el trimestre del Otoño esta semana pasada, Estuve muy orgulloso de ver a tantos de nuestros estudiantes, la facultad, el personal y miembros de la comunidad unirse para crear un ambiente de bienvenida para todos. Les sugiero que seleccionen en uno de los temas del Mes de la Hispanidad, “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation," (Unidos: Exclusividad para un Nación más Fuerte) en la cual yo siento que es aplicable para el trabajo que tú haces todos los días en GHC—somos más fuertes juntos.
