Grays Harbor College Men’s Basketball Head Coach Virgil Matthews has been inducted into the University of Montana’s Grizzly Athletics Hall of Fame, honored alongside his 2005 – 06 teammates.
As starting guard during the Grizzlies’ standout 2005 – 06 season, Matthews helped lead the team to a Big Sky Conference tournament championship and an NCAA tournament berth. Remembered for their grit and teamwork, the 2005 – 06 Grizzlies made history as the last Big Sky Conference team to win a game in the NCAA tournament.
Following his collegiate success, Matthews enjoyed a 13-year professional playing career in Germany and spent four years coaching professionally before joining GHC.
“Coach Matthews brings the same competitive spirit, leadership, and integrity to GHC that defined him as a student athlete,” said Jody Pope, Director of Athletics. “We’re proud to see his legacy recognized at the highest level.”
GHC President Dr. Carli Schiffner also congratulated Coach Matthews, stating, “We are proud to celebrate Coach Matthews and the excellence he consistently brings to our student athletes and the broader community. This recognition is truly well-deserved!”
