Athletics Update

This past weekend was very busy for our athletic teams.

Volleyball- 

Although our season was over for volleyball. Three of our players took part in the all star game on Sunday in Tacoma. The GHC Sophomore all stars were Brooke Spoor, Sara Caraveo, and Jayde Jenkins.

Men’s Wrestling- 

The guys took to the mat in the Spokane Open tournament. They finished in 12th place out of 29 teams.

Women’s Wrestling- 

The ladies also competed in Spokane. They came away with a 2nd place finish 7 points behind Simon Fraser (116-109). Cecilia Saavedra, Desiree Zavala, and Paige Baynes placed 1st in their weight classes, Nina Pham came away with a 2nd place finish, Julian Yates, Kateri Rowell, Kacie Moorehouse 3rd, Jenae Shannon and Maryssa Monterrosa 5th, and Megan Gonzalez 6th place.

Men’s Basketball- 

The guys opened their season Saturday with a contest against a tough Edmonds team. The Tritons came away with the win 93-67. Russell Tillery led the Chokers in scoring with 23 points. Ben Mendoza added 11 points, Will Weems and Cornelius Holifield tallied 9 each. Tillery also led the Chokers in rebounds with 5. The guys hit the floor again tonight at 6pm in the GHC Gym. They square off with another tough foe, as the Clark Penguins visit.

Women’s Basketball- 

The ladies were busy all weekend playing in the Yakima kick off tournament. They faced Walla Walla in game 1 Friday. Walla Walla took the win 87-66. The Chokers had a balanced attack with Alexia Thrower scoring 15, Sandin Kidder 13, and Angela Sikora adding 11 points. Thrower also dished out 7 assists and recorded 10 steals. In game 2 on Saturday the Chokers beat the Blue Mountain Timberwolves 84-74. The Chokers went into the 4th quarter down 63-59, and managed to outscore the Wolves 25-11 to take the win. Thrower tossed in 31 in this one. Other scoring leaders were Katie Brisbois with 18, Kidder with 13, and Estelle Wilson with 12 points. Thrower added 9 steals, Kidder 8 and Brisbois 7. In game 3 the Chokers faced the Columbia Basin Hawks. The Chokers won their second straight 92-75. Thrower scored 41 with 12 steals and 7 assists. Kidder dropped in 20 points and Wilson added 13. The first home action for the ladies will be December 15-16 and 17 as we host the crossover tournament. Those games will be played on campus in the GHC gym.
